So is this documentary that goes behind the scenes of the making of My Struggle, the debut episode the long-delayed tenth season of The X-Files a “movie?” Well, it’s not exactly an episode of television, but it still feels kind of weird to call it a “movie,” even though plenty of movies go direct to video. Anyway, it meets my weird technical standards for what gets a “movie review,” so here we go. Anyway, it’s just short of an hour and it follows the production of My Struggle in a pretty in-depth way, from writing to filming to editing to release. This does the same thing some behind the scenes docs do, most notably that astounding Phantom Menace documentary, which is inadvertently reveal why the finished product is so lackluster. It’s not as extreme because the 10th season of The X-Files isn’t as bad as TPM, but still, when Joel McHale repeatedly says that he thinks he’s not giving a good performance, you just want to give him a hearty handshake for being the one person to get it. Of no real interest, much like the season itself. 2 stars.
tl;dr – this gives an accurate glimpse behind the scenes of a television series, but it’s as lackluster as the series itself. 2 stars.
