After Hours with Heidi & Frank
Studio: Toad Hop Network
Category: Comedy
What It Is
A couple of radio hosts & their engineer sit around and shoot the **** for an hour or so.
Technical Details
This show isn’t putting out new episodes currently; it ended its run in August of 2012. When it was still running, a new episode dropped every Friday & iTunes still has ninety-seven episodes, all the way back to July of 2010. The show runs around an hour, occasionally longer. It has an Explicit tag and earns it; lots of profanity and very graphic talk about sex.
What About It
I have to admit that I’m typically not a big fan of this kind of show. All of these kind of “FM radio” host shows seem to feature the same stereotypes. The lead is typically a blunt-speaking, insensitive dude; the secondary host is a sexy woman that gets a lot of mileage out of talking about sex. There’s usually a third wheel that doesn’t talk as much, but gets in some good licks. And there’s usually something approximating zero chemistry since these three folks just got smashed together by their employers mostly by the luck of the draw. But this show is a real outlier. I think it really does come down to the genuine chemistry these three folks have. They seem to just really be friends that enjoy talking **** about each other and chatting about random things. And they’re all genuinely funny. This is a show that gets consistent laughs out of me, though, again, if you’re easily offended you’ll want to steer clear as nothing is off limits to these guys.
Essential If
You’ve always thought there was potential in the whole Morning Zoo concept.
Avoid Like the Plague If
You love Jeff Foxworthy, but think he’s just a little too blue on Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader.
Best Entry Point
I haven’t heard every episode in the archive, but I kind of think you could pick an episode at random and get a good one; I’ve never heard a really bad episode. But I do really like Win a Date; it wraps up with two listeners calling in and competing to win a date with the engineer and they’re both hilarious. And if you’re into it, Heebie Jeebies features the grossest story I’ve ever heard on the show (in fact, one of the grossest things I’ve ever heard in my life). Even Frank, a guy who can tell a sick story with the best of them, literally retches into the trash can. So I don’t really recommend that one, unless, as I say, you’re into extreme humor. Very extreme.
3 ½ stars.
Next time, it’s a show about traveling to interesting places; unfortunately, the people traveling there are boring as heck.
