So, just a word about this omnibus. I’ve waxed euphoric plenty in the past about the Library of America. This volume is certainly no exception. This is the latest volume in a series of books the Library has published; the goal was to publish Roth’s complete works and they’ve done so now, at least if Roth is true to his word that Nemesis is the last thing he’s going to write. I didn’t care for The Humbling, but the other three novels here are just absolutely essential. The editing and such didn’t add a whole lot here; the notes were pretty sparse. Still, if you’re going to read The Humbling you should read it here, where you can see how it fits into this quartet of novels. Anyway, this volume comes highly recommended. 4 stars.
tl;dr – the Library of America again provides a wonderful way to experience literature in context; some of Roth’s best work is here. 4 stars.
