Buy Kingsman: The Secret Service
So, I don’t even really know how to talk about this movie. Colin Firth is an uber-cool secret agent and he takes this punk street kid, played by an endearingly charismatic Taron Egerton, under his wing and then Samuel L. Jackson, giving a real performance for the first time in ages, wants to murder everyone on the planet. Anyway, it’s one of the most amazing, balls to the wall action movies I think I’ve ever seen. Mark Strong & Michael Caine are great support and the action sequences are just genuinely phenomenal. Vaughn brings a twitchy energy to them kind of unlike anything I’ve seen before. The film is hilariously funny and astoundingly violent, sometimes at the exact same moment, which I might find morally troubling if I didn’t love it so much. The apotheosis here is a brawl that takes place in a church; it’s one of the best action sequences I’ve literally EVER seen and my jaw was just on the floor the whole time at how amazing it was. And then you’ve got a great duel between Egerton’s character and Samuel L. Jackson’s main hitwoman, Sofia Boutella, who has, by the way, razor sharp blades for legs. Yeah, blades for legs. No, the blades are her legs. No, they ARE her legs. Okay, just watch it. And then the climax is genuinely brilliant; the heroes manage to turn the evil weapon back onto the villains in a way that I found unbelievably shocking and hilarious and gonzo. This movie kind of came out of nowhere for me and it blindsided me with its brilliance. It’s a great, great action movie, no question at all.
tl;dr – wacky, hilarious, hyper-violent action movie is a non-stop thrill ride with jaw-dropping action sequences and a gonzo sense of humor. 4 stars.
