This episode, like the last one, does a really wonderful job at making the story of the week connect thematically to Olivia’s on-going story. It revolves around a business CEO; her past affair with a judge is revealed when the judge is nominated for a Supreme Court seat (and kudos, by the way, for realizing that this whole nomination needed to happen after the first part of the season). The CEO, her husband and her daughter are caught in the middle. They’re all wonderfully played by, respectively, Lisa Edelstein, Jay Karnes & Saidah Ekulona. This episode is every bit as much, if not more so, about their emotional journeys as it is the rest of the on-going story arc. It’s easily the best case of the week so far, unless I’m forgetting one, and the obvious ways the infidelity at the heart of it speaks to Olivia’s dilemma are handled quite well with Washington giving another great performance. Highly recommended. 4 stars.
tl;dr – fantastic guest cast switches focus from on-going story arc to the really beautifully handled case of the week. 4 stars.
