What It Is
An hour or so of Americana rock music from independent & mainstream artists.
Technical Details
A new episode drops every week. Episodes are usually a bit over an hour. Sound quality needs to be discussed because it’s a music show; it’s very good. The hundred most recent episodes are at the iTunes page. To go back farther than that, check out the show’s website.
What About It
Von’s the host and he plays a wide selection of styles within the genre of Americana. Sometimes, he talks a lot, which is okay I guess. But the show always delivers quite a few songs, typically in a pretty raw style. There’s a lot of folk in the Americana genre, but this one leans way more toward the harder side of the genre. The songs are generally pretty good, if not outstanding. It’s a solid show, rarely a great one.
3 stars.
Essential If
You can recite all the lyrics to Ronnie & Neil by the Drive By Truckers.
Avoid Like the Plague If
John Philip Sousa is the best Americana artist ever!
Best Entry Point
Sometimes the show does discographies. It’ll take an episode or maybe two and play through the history of a particular band. The host will also talk about the career arc of the band or artist throughout the show as well. The best is a two parter dedicated to Wilco. Lot of great music, from Uncle Tupelo’s Punch Drunk Love to the self-titled album that’s their next to last. Wilco’s got a great story as a band and their evolution over the decades makes for some great listening. Hits every album in between Punch Drunk Love and Wilco (The Album) with a song or two from each of them. The episodes are a bit longer than usual; the entire show, including parts one and two, adds up to over three hours. Good times. Here’s part one & part two.
