In this episode, Max receives communication through her personal ad in the newspaper, but soon grows suspicious; is she being stalked by the mysterious serial killer known as Cupid? Far be it from me to answer yay or nay on that, but I’ll just say that this is a frigging great episode. It has probably the best pre-credits teaser of the series so far. The exploration of the personal ads is really great from a “time capsule” point of view. And the cast and story are great. Lauren Holly is great as the driven Max in this episode and Kelly Connell gives a great, layered performance in his recurring role as Carter Pike, the town pathologist. Sam Anderson (you know, from Lost) is back as FBI Agent Morrell, the character we last saw way back in the second episode of the season, and he’s great, of course. Stephen Tobolowsky& Kurtwood Smith both give really great, ambiguous performances in guest appearances. This is fantastic episode, entertaining from start to finish, surprisingly suspenseful at times and it kept me guessing the whole way as to where it was ultimately going with some nice twists. And, man, this show is slippery; they got me again with a mystery solution that I didn’t see coming. I haven’t been this baffled by a mystery show in ages and I’m loving it. This is a great, great episode. 4 stars.
tl;dr – hunt for serial killer gives room for great performances from guests & regulars alike; surprisingly suspenseful, with a genuinely unforeseen ending, this one’s a winner. 4 stars.
