In this solid thriller, seven strangers find themselves lured to an isolated island off the coast of Mexico under false pretenses. I’m not going to tell you that they start getting murdered or anything, but you know how this goes. Hall quotes Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None right at the beginning of the book, so she’s honest about her influences and she’s also more willing than most authors of this genre to allow all of her characters to be unlikable, including the main character. The book doesn’t boast any real surprises, but it’s an entertaining enough diversion. Hall is a pretty technically proficient author. Her prose is quite a bit better than average for this genre; I mean, it’s not poetry, but it flows, has some actual wit and people talk the way real people talk. 3 stars.
tl;dr – mystery-thriller wears its influences on its sleeve and is fairly predictable, but Hall’s prose is far above average for the thriller genre and the book is entertainingly mean-spirited. 3 stars.
