So, you have probably forgotten the kerfuffle over Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, the short film that accompanied Coco when it was released into theaters. It ran well over twenty minutes and, according to reports, befuddled customers were leaving the theater thinking they’d walked into the wrong one or that the employees had started the wrong movie. Reportedly, it also just wasn’t very good, but I couldn’t speak to that. This short film runs just right at two minutes and it was released online prior to Coco being released to theaters; I think they should have just went ahead and stuck it before Coco as the short anyway, even though it had been released online already. It’s the charming story of Dante, the hapless dog/spirit guide from Coco and his quests to track down a bone for lunch; unfortunately, this particular bone seems rather . . . magical. It’s cute, funny, high-energy and Dante is the perfect character to base a short around, the most cartoonish, but in a good way, character from Coco. I am going to remove half a star because there is a “joke” around Dante falling into a patch of cactus and emerging covered in needles. Granted, back in the thirties, they would have dropped an anvil on his head and we’d have found it hilarious, but these are gentler times or maybe I’m just a gentler person or something, but I found it kind of ugly. Still, it’s a blast. 3 ½ stars.
tl;dr – cute, funny short revolves around the dog from Coco and is a breezy blast. 3 ½ stars.
