Well, let’s continue my weirdly structured 2019 movie retrospective. As a reminder, this is a retrospective dedicated to the movies I saw in 2019, not just the movies that came out in 2019, so next we’re looking at 2018 Movies I saw in 2019. As we all know, so many of the best movies of the year come out right at the end of the year, so I didn’t get to a lot of the prestige 2018 movies until 2019 had begun. And this is where we slow to a crawl because I’ll be looking at the top ten in three categories, Best Male Performances, Best Female Performances and Best Film, so we’ll take a post for each of those. Next up:
2018 Movies I Saw in 2019
Top 10 Female Performances
Sakura Ando – Shoplifters
If someone hits you and tells you they are doing it because they love you, they are a liar. This is what someone does when they love you.
Yalitza Aparicio – Roma
Poor little thing.
Olivia Colman – The Favourite
Some wounds do not close. I have many such.
Aisling Franciosi – The Nightingale
You can tell me to shut up. You can threaten me. But it won’t do nothing. That girl you raped, whose husband and baby you murdered – that girl died. And you can’t kill what’s already dead.
Jong-seo Jun – Burning
Jong-seo Jun is fragile, off-balance and heartbreaking as Hae-mi.
Mayu Matsuoka – Shoplifters
Mayu Matsuoka . . . keeps the stereotypical fragility at bay and the fact that she might just be the strongest of any of the family is something the viewer only slowly grasps as the film rolls on.
Hailee Steinfeld – Bumblebee
He’s more human than you’ll ever be.
Emma Stone – The Favourite
As it turns out, I am capable of much unpleasantness.
Marina de Tavira – Roma
We are alone. No matter what they tell you, we women are always alone.
Rachel Weisz – The Favourite
Sometimes you look like a badger. And you can rely on me to tell you. Because I will not lie. That is love.
